Currituck Banks NERR
Bounded by the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, the site encompasses 960 acres. Currituck Banks was one of the three original NERR components dedicated in 1985.
Kitty Hawk Woods CR
The Kitty Hawk Woods component is located on the Outer Banks, in the center of the village of Kitty Hawk bordering the Currituck Sound.
Buckridge CR
At approximately 28,000 acres, the Emily and Richardson Preyer Buckridge component is both the largest single property in the Coastal Reserve and its only inland site.
Buxton Woods CR
The 968-acre Buxton Woods component is located on Hatteras Island, one of the barrier islands that form the Outer Banks.
Rachel Carson NERR
This site is a complex of islands: Carrot Island, Town Marsh, Bird Shoal, Horse Island, and Middle Marsh. Acquisition of the area was completed in 1985, with the addition of Middle Marsh in 1989.
Masonboro Island NERR
The Masonboro Island component is the largest site within the NCNERR system and was designated in 1991.
Zeke's Island NERR
Zeke’s Island is located in the Cape Fear River basin and was one of the three original National Estuarine Research Reserve components dedicated in 1985.
Bald Head Woods CR
The 173-acre Bald Head Woods component is part of the Smith Island Complex, located just east of the Cape Fear River.
