Collaborative Projects

Bald Head Woods

  • Bald Head Island Creative Writing Retreat: co-sponsored by UNC-Wilmington Creative Writing Department, Bald Head Island Conservancy, and the NCCR. Incorporates concepts and language of place in writing.
  • Multiple year frog survey performed in collaboration with the Bald Head Island Conservancy and USGS. Effort utilizes volunteers to listen at several stations for vocalizing frogs and toads. Information gathered is forwarded to USGS for inclusion in their national database.

Kitty Hawk Woods

Collaboration with Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Program to administer citizen’s water quality monitoring network in Kitty Hawk Woods.

Currituck Sound

Partnership between U.S. Geologic Survey, N.C. Division of Water Quality, U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, Elizabeth City State University, and the NCCR focusing on water quality in the Currituck Sound. Water quality information and samples collected behind Currituck Banks and Kitty Hawk Woods will inform a baseline computer model of Currituck Sound.

Masonboro Island

Turtle nest monitoring project in collaboration with Dr. Amanda Southwood at UNC-Wilmington. Project utilizes recent biology graduates and volunteers to patrol the northern half of the island on foot. Nests are located using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and caged to reduce fox predation.

Zeke’s Island

Renovation effort being conducted in conjunction with an ad-hoc group of managers near Zeke’s Island. Will include improvements to existing motorboat access ramp and separate launch facility for kayaks.
